The White House said officials are keeping an eye on the delays. The results have been minimal impacts to efficiency while maintaining consistent levels of safety in the national airspace system.”ĭelta said 200 of its flights were affected by the delays. “We’ve mitigated the impact by augmenting staffing, rerouting traffic, and increasing spacing between aircraft when needed. “We have experienced a slight increase in sick leave at two facilities,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. Some of those flights Friday morning were delayed by an average of 1 hour and 26 minutes. LaGuardia attributed the problem to a shortage of workers “at FAA air traffic control centers along the East Coast.” Flights originating from other airports were affected as the FAA sought to control the pace of planes arriving at LaGuardia. Philadelphia International Airport also saw slight staffing-related delays. That’s the most basic way I can explain it.Travelers experienced significant flight delays at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday because of a shortage of air traffic control center workers amid the partial government shutdown. Of course, now that he’s an hour late getting in, his connection flight leaving LGA will be an hour late leaving. That way when he takes off we have room for him. Instead of letting a plane take off at PHL and circle in the air for an hour before we have a spot for him, we tell him he just has to take off an hour late. So once LGA is backed up from what I was saying before, we start holding planes on the ground at their departure airport. When they’re circling around up there they take up precious space in a sky that is already congested. When we can, we like to avoid holding planes in the air. This continues and compounds through the day. Those leftover 20 planes from last hour are now taking slots from the planes that were supposed to come this hour. Once those delays start, it compounds the rest of the day. If the weather gets bad and now we can only land 40 per hour, even more planes inbound will be delayed. If LGA can theoretically land 64 planes per hour in perfect weather and no variables, and there are 84 inbound this hour, some of them will be delayed.
